Mo Gilligan has Brit viewers in hysterics as he introduces Lewis Capaldi as ‘Sam’

Mo Gilligan had viewers in stitches at The Brit Awards on Saturday when he called Lewis Capaldi by the wrong name before the singer took to the stage.

Comedian Mo, 34, mistakenly introduced 'Sam Capaldi' at the annual awards bash on Saturday night, leaving the audience and viewers at home confused.

Mo, who hosted the awards for a second year in a row, announced: "Lets have another performance, it's a singer-songwriter who is the spirit of the Brit Awards in human form. Here with his amazing number one single, Forget Me.

"It's the brilliant – go crazy! It's Sam Capaldi."

Lewis didn't appear to acknowledge the blunder and continued to belt out his hit track Forget Me, with the audience going wild for the artist.

As soon as his incredible performance came to a close, Mo called for the audience give Lewis and the gospel choir he performed with a huge round of applause.

He then addressed his earlier name mistake, and jokingly told the crowd: "I have to apologise, I did call him Sam – it just goes to show how strong the drinks are at the Brits. They’re not playing around!"

Viewers were quick to point out Mo's mistake and took to social media to poke fun at the comedian.

"I'm such a huge fan of Sam Capaldi," one person sarcastically tweeted, as a second added: "Who is Sam Capaldi may I ask?"

A third wrote: "I love Sam Capaldi," and another BRITS fan said: "Excuse me did Mo just call Lewis Sam Capaldi," with a confused emoji.

Lewis, 26, appeared to see the fun side in the name mixup, and despite being at the awards bash took to Twitter himself to share a joke about Mo's mistake.

A fan superimposed a picture of Lewis' face on top of singer Sam Smith's body, with the Scottish star then resharing it to Twitter and writing: "Sam capaldi x".

His tweet quickly racked up over 30,000 likes and thousands of retweets and replies. Ex-footballer Peter Crouch wrote: "This man is a hero," with a laughing emoji, while another Twitter user said: "Oh my God this wins the Internet! Hands down!"
