Kym Marsh says she wants to try something different after leaving Coronation Street – but that doesn’t mean reality TV.
The 42-year-old stunned fans when she announced she was to leave her character Michelle Connor behind having played the role since 2006.
But the Bistro owner won’t be killed off, much to the delight of the former Hear’Say singer.
One of key reasons for her leaving is a major change in Kym’s family circumstances.
She announced the impending arrival of her grandson is part of the reason but in her OK! Magazine column she has offered more insight into her bold decision to quit the cobbles.
“I want to try different acting roles in other dramas,” she wrote.
“I’m in talks about future projects, which is exciting. The precise date I actually leave Corrie is still being decided, so it’s hard to make solid plans.
“I’m grateful that my character Michelle isn’t going to be killed off, as it means I’m able to take a break and try other things knowing the door will be left open for my character to return.”
But a stint in the Jungle won’t be top of her to-do list.
“I’m not leaving Corrie after 13 years to do reality TV,” she said.
“Never say never, but it’s not on my agenda at the moment. I want to give myself the opportunity to try my hand at other acting roles, as that’s my passion.”
Corrie’s executive Producer John Whiston says that they were "very sad" to see her leave.
"Kym has done a fantastic job on the show as Michelle Connor, bringing incredible heart and humanity to some hugely important stories," he said.
"We will be really sad to lose her when she goes but totally understand that, after dedicating herself to the show for so long and so brilliantly, she now fancies trying something else for a while.
"We, and the audience, thank her and wish her well."
