James Jordan: Strictly star hits out at BBC show bosses over Anton Du Beke ‘mistake’

Strictly: Anton Du Beke makes dig at Brendan Cole

James Jordan, 42, admitted that he thinks Anton Du Beke, 53, should have stayed on the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel after he briefly filled in for Motsi Mabuse recently. Anton stepped in for Motsi after she was forced to miss two weeks of live shows after being made to self-isolate following an “urgent” trip to Germany.

I think it’s a mistake not having Anton on the panel

The professional ballroom star made a lasting impact with some fans of Strictly after taking on the role, just after he was voted out of the contest alongside dance partner Jacqui Smith.

James who has previously danced on Strictly until he was dropped from the show back in 2013, has said that Anton should have been allowed to stay on the panel as a fourth judge.

He explained: “Having three judges this year clearly makes the possibility of ties more likely.

‘The more judges you have the more variation you have in scores.

“This is exactly why I thought Anton would be a great addition to the panel in Bruno’s [Tonioli] absence this year, to still have four judges, as when there’s three it’s inevitable you will have more tied scores from them,”

On the judging panel, this year is Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.

Bruno Tonioli who is usually a fourth judge on the show was unable to make the live shows this year after flight restrictions saw him remain in the USA.

James continued: “I think it’s a mistake not having Anton on the panel instead of Bruno this year. I like having the four judges there for the variety of scores.”

Anton has in recent years struggled to make it to the finals until last year.

James claimed that the 53-year-old is deliberately being “lumbered” with partners who won’t win, and therefore it would be better if he was given a judging role on the show.

He questioned: “Why isn’t he given a Maisie [Smith] or an Abbie Clancy? Otherwise, give him a presenting job or stick him on the judging panel.

“Anton is part of the Strictly furniture and I don’t know why the producers do this to him year after year.

“OK he reached the final last year but that’s the first time in a very long time, probably since the first series when he came third,” James added to Ladbrokes.

The husband of fellow dancer Ola Jordan alleged that Anton has never been a front runner to win the programme because of who he is partnered with.

James said: “He’s never been given a favourite, he’s never had a Kara Tointon or an Alesha Dixon, a real strong contender.

“I love Anton and would love for him to be given a celebrity who has some real potential to win but year after year it’s the same thing and he’s probably going to be given a female who’s more mature and hasn’t really got the danceability.

“I thought he did a fantastic job on the panel, though,” he finished.

Anton won praise from fans for his stint as a judge, as viewers labelled him “brilliant”.

One said: “Love Anton as a judge!”

A second replied: “Anton is brilliant on the judging panel.”
