Here's What Went Down Between Chris Rock and Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars

Chris Rock and Will Smith had an EXCHANGE during the 2022 Oscars—and no, it was not a staged bit, unfortunately.

ICYMI, while Chris was presenting an award, he made a few jokes, but one that was directed at Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith didn’t land well at all.

Chris referenced her as “G.I. Jane” since the actress has her hair cut into a low fade. Cameras panned to Jada, and her face immediately read as if she did not like the joke, which is completely understandable since she has been very vocal about battling hair loss since being diagnosed with alopecia. In a seeming defense of his wife, Will then jumped on the stage and slapped Chris for the comment.

Here’s the moment Chris Rock made a “G.I. Jane 2” joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, prompting Will Smith to punch him and yell, “Leave my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.” #Oscars pic.twitter.com/kHTZXI6kuL

Sooo yeah. It got messy…quickly. When Will, who then went on to win Best Actor for his role in King Richard, returned to his seat, he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”

Holy shit! Was that real?! Chris Rock makes a joke about Jada, Will Smith walked to stage and smacked Chris, and Will yelled twice, “Keep my wife’s name outta your fucking mouth!” People are looking around, mouths agape, trying to figure out if this was real or setup. Seems real! pic.twitter.com/Yr1yjcSHTl

Friendly reminder that the Oscars is a live show, so needless to say there were looots of bleeps. But apparently, for some random reason, the telecast wasn’t censored in Australia:

Sheesh! Prayers up to Will’s publicist who probably now has a year’s worth of damage control to do. For more information on what happened after this moment and what Will said in his Oscars acceptance speech, head this way:
