Duncan Bannatyne opens up on saving someone’s life: ‘I have first aid training, I ran along to see if I could help’

Speaking exclusively in this week’s edition of OK! Magazine, Duncan Bannatyne, 70, reveals what happened when he saw someone in need of help

The Dragon's Den star said: “We didn’t actually save anyone’s life. A couple of young boys got into trouble in the water and we could see there was an issue.

“As I have first aid training, I ran along to see if I could help,” he continues. “But the situation was already under control when we got there, so there were no heroics on my part.”

While Duncan may have played down his part in the rescue, he did explain how he looked in such good shape during his beach break.

Despite being 31 years older than his stunning wife Nigora, the Scottish entrepreneur hit the sands displaying a trim torso that even newly-svelte Simon Cowell would envy.

“I do Iynegar yoga,” the businessman explains of his fighting fit shape.

“A couple of years ago, I was in such pain with my back, I was taking six to eight painkillers a day, so I decided to try yoga. Within two weeks, I was off the painkillers. I feel 20 years younger. I’m in better shape now than I was at 50.”

Duncan and Nigora, 39, also opened up about their marriage of two and a half years and their struggle to have a baby.

The pair have previously made no secret of their plans to have a child together – Duncan is already a dad to six children from two previous marriages, while Nigora has a 17 year-old daughter – but reveal their dream hasn’t materialised.

I don’t think it’s going to happen. We tried, but I don’t think we are going to have children,” Duncan explains. “We’re not trying to prevent it happening, so if it did, great, but I don’t think it is going to.”

Nigora seconds this, saying, “ If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen, but we are not doing anything about it, like IVF, and we are not going to stress about it.”

Duncan adds that he wants to make the most of life now he is in his seventies, having taken a step back from the day to day running of his health and fitness brand.

“I am involved in [my business], but in a very small way,” he says. “I have six directors…I probably work for 10 hours a week at the most – and that’s a hard week. But I have worked hard all my life and I’m 70 years old now, so I want to be able to enjoy my life.”

He will be returning to our TV screens soon, however, in the new series of BBC One’s The Real Marigold Hotel.

Duncan will join other famous ‘pensioners’ for a life-changing trip to India.

“I wasn’t going to do any more reality TV and then I thought, ‘Six weeks in India, all expenses paid?’” he reveals. “And it turned out to be such an enriching experience. It was amazing. I couldn’t do Strictly or anything like that because of my back, and my inability to understand music!”
