Their marriage has had its fair share of highs and lows over the years, but as Coleen and Wayne Rooney prepare to celebrate their 15th anniversary, we can exclusively reveal their special plans to mark a fresh start in their relationship.
Sources close to the couple have told new that Coleen and Wayne – who tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Italy on 12 June 2008 – are set to celebrate the milestone by renewing their vows.
“After everything they’ve been through, Coleen and Wayne plan to go all out for their 15th wedding anniversary,” a source told us. “For them, it’ll mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another – hopefully less drama-filled – stage of their lives.
“They’re planning a beautiful vow renewal, possibly in Barbados, with their closest friends and family. It’s their happy place and they want a quiet, understated, but romantic ceremony.”
The source explained that Coleen would like something similar to pals Abbey Clancy and Peter Crouch, who said “I do” for the second time when they jetted off to the Maldives in December.
“She wants a stunning and understated white or nude dress and Wayne in a cream or beige suit,” they said. “Their boys will be centre stage, all matching Wayne in their little suits. And she is secretly hoping for a new diamond ring for the occasion. Something delicate, understated and beautiful.
“They’re in a really happy place right now and, while they’ve been out in the States supporting Wayne as he heads up DC United, Coleen has been planning things and focusing on their future.”
Coleen has heavily hinted at plans for a vow renewal, as new spotted that she’s started following Rebecca Spendlove, a wedding make-up and hair artist, on Instagram. She also recently followed Liverpool-based jewellers Say It With Diamonds, who often post pictures of stunning rings.
But it’s not just Coleen who has been busy making plans behind the scenes. Our source says that former England footballer Wayne also has some big things up his sleeve for the occasion.
“Wayne is actually a romantic guy – he loves doing things for Coleen to make her happy. His thing has always been to write her cute little poems, so he plans to write a poem and read it as his vows to her,” the source told us.

They added, “He has grand plans for their anniversary, too. He has this idea of doing 15 special things for her, to mark the 15 years they’ve been married. One of his grandest plans is to whisk her off to Santa Margherita Ligure in Italy – where they wed.
“He wants to hire out part of their wedding venue – Villa Durazzo – and hire a private chef to cook them a lavish dinner. He wants great food, candles, flowers and maximum romance. He also wants to take her out on a yacht for the day and really spoil her. They had a big yacht party as part of their wedding, so it’s reminiscent of that, but he wants it to be just the two of them.”
Wayne is said to be hoping to “reconnect as a couple” and “relax away from their kids”, with the source adding, “He’s also planning some lovely things back home, little trips down memory lane in Liverpool and meals at some of their old haunts.
“It’s all just ideas at the moment, and whether he can pull it off is another thing, but he really wants to make her feel special. Wayne is well aware that he’s lucky to have such a beautiful, strong and loyal wife. He wants to make sure she feels happy, pampered and spoiled. For Coleen, she’s not a flashy person, so she’d be happy with a nice meal and quality time together.”
Our source continued, “They are both proud they’ve weathered the storms in their relationship and are standing stronger than ever as they enter their 15th year together.
“They have a lovely family, their relationship is going from strength to strength now and to celebrate that will be a real privilege and a joy.”
Coleen and Wayne, both 37, who are parents to sons Kai, 13, Klay, nine, Kit, seven, and Cass, five, first got together when they were both 16. But they’ve made no secret of the struggles they have faced along the way.
In the Amazon Prime Video film, Rooney, which aired last year, the couple opened up for the first time about Wayne’s indiscretions.
“It’s not acceptable what he’s done but it’s happened and that was the stage of life we were in at the time. But we’ve moved on,” Coleen said, before adding, “I haven’t got the anger that I did at the time.”
Talking about the fact he slept with prostitutes behind his wife’s back, Wayne said, “When you’re in the wrong place and there’s alcohol involved, then you’re going to make bad decisions and you’re going to have to suffer the consequences. That’s what happens. It doesn’t take away any of my love for Coleen. I held my hands up and we worked through it.”
And during her ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial against Rebekah Vardy, Coleen told the court how she and Wayne briefly split after he was arrested for drink-driving following a 10-hour booze session.
“I didn’t know how my marriage was going to work out. I didn’t know what was going on in that relationship so we agreed to work things out,” she said.
“I had not settled on this. Is it that we are getting back together? At this time there was speculation I was back at the house as I was spending a lot of time at my parents’ house.
“That was information I was happy to share with my private group and we were trying to sort out the relationship and see where things were going. But I didn’t want the public to know that. I didn’t want them to know, ‘This is it we are getting back together.’”
Wayne was by Coleen’s side each day in court during the lengthy trial, which ended in July. And a second source has told new that while it was a stressful time for Coleen – who won the case – it made their relationship “much stronger”.
“It was tough for Coleen but it actually brought her and Wayne closer together. Wayne was a great support for her. They’ve been through a lot over the years, but Wayne has learnt a lot and has grown up so much,” the source said. “Coleen and Wayne are in a really good place, probably the best place they’ve been in during their marriage. They will definitely be celebrating in style for their 15th anniversary.
“Coleen has been thinking about renewing the vows for a few years, so the 15-year mark could be a good opportunity. They’ve been through so much, and it’d be nice to look back on how far they’ve come. They’ll definitely do something special and spend some quality time together with the family.”
Coleen previously admitted that a vow renewal is something she would “consider in the future”. Speaking ahead of their 10-year anniversary in 2017, she said, “My mum and dad have renewed their vows a few times – they’ve been married 30-odd years. I’ll consider it in the future but not yet.”
