Charlotte Hawkins, 45, was among many who were left in tears after ITV aired Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway’s documentary Finding Derek, which gave viewers an intimate insight into the pain and suffering behind every Covid patient and their family. Ahead of watching the tear-jerking program, Charlotte shared her thoughts on social media, and hoped that he will one day soon “find his way back”.
It’s so heartbreaking, we’re all just praying Derek will find a way back
Taking to Twitter, she revealed Kate has been in her thoughts throughout this horrific process.
She penned: “Thinking of my lovely friend @kategarraway tonight with her documentary #FindingDerek on @ITV at 9pm.
“It’s so heartbreaking, we’re all just praying Derek will find a way back.
“Please watch & send love to Kate & her family.”
The documentary saw Kate open up about her fears and concerns about how Derek’s lengthy battle with Covid will impact his brain, after spending a year in hospital and now suffering the aftermath of the illness.
The presenter admitted that this element of her other half’s recovery had been “scaring her more and more” recently.
During Finding Derek, she was seen on the phone telling medics: “You wanted to go through with me some of the potential cognitive changes for Derek and how that will impact going forward.”
In the program, which was filmed over the last year, she says that while “I don’t think I ever really saw it (the situation) as giving up work,” that may be a possibility she has to face.
“If I have to give up work to care for him then it is best to do it now when I am earning money,” she says.
Kate then divulged: “The effects of Covid on Derek’s brain are scaring me more and more.
“I’m in constant contact with Derek’s doctors trying to understand their observations.”
One of Derek’s medical team was then heard detailing the “significant damage” he had suffered as a result of COVID-19.
The doctor said: “I think Derek has very significant damage. There’s a lot to take in. I think also emotionally, there’s a lot to take in.”
But despite her turmoil and the uncertainty of her husband’s future, Kate remains strong brave for their two children Darcey and Bill.
Watching from home, Kate’s friends and fellow celebrities also took to social media and praised her “courage” throughout this nightmare.
