It’s Sun Awareness Week and Skin Cancer Awareness month, so if there’s ever a time to think about SPF, it’s now.
According to the British Skin Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of the disease in the UK.
Though it’s often rainy and drab here, that doesn’t mean our skin is exempt from sun damage.
It doesn’t need to be blindingly bright for our skin to absorb the sun’s rays. If it’s daylight, you’re exposed and should be wearing SPF.
It’s also important to chuck out expired SPF and not keep holding onto last year’s bottle just because you didn’t finish it all.
For those resistant to wearing SPF daily, the key is to see it as part of your skincare routine and to find a formula that really meshes with your skin type.
No longer approached by cosmetic brands as a ‘one size fits all’ category of skincare, there are varying textures, finishes and consistencies on the market.
So yes, it is possible to find one you actually enjoy applying.
These are our picks for different skin types and concerns.
For oily skin
The thought of adding another layer of skincare on oily skin might feel off-putting, but it’s important to find one that works well for you.
Murad Oil and Pore Control Mattifier SPF45
Get it for £35 from Lookfantastic.
It would be wrong to assume that anyone with oily skin wants a mattifying effect in their skincare, but for some, especially during the summer months, that’s exactly the desired finish.
Made with oily and congested skin in mind, it’s suitable for those with acne too.
The consistency isn’t thin, so you may find this product takes the place of your usual moisturiser depending on what your skin needs.
Shiseido Clear Suncare Stick SPF50+
Get it for £28 from Cult Beauty.
Sunscreen needs to be topped up, especially if oil has built up over the day.
While stick products aren’t the most hygienic (we wouldn’t recommend this for acne-prone skin), this format makes topping up easy.
It works over makeup and has a technology that enhances protection when skin comes into contact with a liquid, such as sweat.
For sensitive skin
It can be hard to try sensitive-suitable products partly because everyone’s sensitivities are different, but these reliable brands seem to work well on most skin.
Heliocare 360 Water Gel
Get it for £31 from Heliocare.
Heliocare are a well-loved brand in the dermatology world, but are often forgotten about by regular consumers.
Their water resistant formulas (which you need for cover against sweat) come highly recommended by skin experts.
This particular skew is made for sensitive skin and eyes with a lower concentration of fragrance and elimination of alcohol, and is non-comedogenic so won’t cause spots.
La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Aquagel SPF30
Get it for £34.50 from Boots.
La Roche-Posay are seen as one of the go-to brands for sunscreen for all skin types – and with good reason.
This new launch is a transparent gel with SPF30 (making it good for those resistant to an SPF50), hyaluronic acid antioxidants.
Skin should feel hydrated and calm with prolonged use.
The gel texture will also suit oilier skin too as it will sink in quicker than a cream.
For dry skin
Thicker in texture and more intensely hydrating, these are our picks for those who need an added moisture boost.
Hello Sunday The One That’s Got It All – Facial Primer SPF 50
Get it for £20 from Cult Beauty.
Applying foundation over dry skin can sometimes exacerbate the appearance of any flakiness or dry patches.
Newly launched, this SPF-meets-primer has a rich texture that dries slightly tacky, making it perfect to prolong the wear of foundation while creating a smooth canvas for makeup to sit on top of.
And, importantly it doesn’t have a white cast.
Ultra Violette Queen Screen Luminising Sun Serum SPF 50+
Get it for £36 from SpaceNK.
Giving glow alongside good protection, this will alleviate dullness.
There’s vitamin C in the formula too, which over time will boost radiance too.
And if you enjoy fragranced skincare, this has a mood-boosting floral touch.
Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 with Sunflower Extract
Get it for £20 from Cult Beauty.
The main selling point of Supergoop!’s offering is the fact that it’s been widely agreed to leave no white cast and be truly transparent.
This version can be used on the body and face, so if you’re feeling lazy you can get both jobs done at once.
Due to this it’s a slightly richer texture that drier skins will appreciate.
