Take a look into your beauty cupboard at home – what do you see? Most likely, a whole lot of plastic.
From makeup to bodycare, shampoos to face masks, many of the products we use on a regular basis are sold in plastic packaging.
And it adds up, especially when you consider that Brits bought a total of £27.2bn in beauty products and services in 2018 alone.
To counteract this wasteful nature and promote sustainable living, one brand is planning to launch beauty refill stations across the UK, so that customers can fill up their existing containers instead of buying new ones.
Beauty Kitchen announced the news at the Davos World Economic Forum last month, presenting a campaign that includes 1,000 machines to be distributed over the next two years, and are estimated to save 100 million single use plastic bottles.
The refill stations will feature touch screens where customers can choose to top up their shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash and facial cleanser.
The contents are dispensed automatically once selected, so there’s no muss, fuss or nasty bacteria making its way into your beauty items.
All of the products are organic, vegan and free from microplastics, as well as Bunny Certified (the gold standard for cruelty-free items, meaning they are not tested on animals).
Prices for refills will vary, starting at £5 for 500ml – which isn’t bad, considering you’re also helping the environment.
You don’t even need to bring your own bottles (which Beauty Kitchen says can be unhygienic).
Instead, each station will dispense a reusable aluminium bottle and printed labels with all the required legal information, including ingredients – so that you can check for allergens.
And the machines will also be cleaned and washed on a regular basis to avoid build-up and bacteria.
So, where will you be able to find the refill stations?
Beauty Kitchen will dot them around major high streets, as well as independent zero-waste grocery and retail stores in smaller towns, market towns and major cities.
Various university campuses, garden centres, train stations, hair and beauty salons and office complexes will also see them installed.
The first ones will arrive in April – keep your eyes peeled.
