I’ve always had the mindset that an apple a day really does keep the doctor away. I make it a point to eat nutrient-dense, well-rounded meals so that I don’t have to take vitamin supplements. I think that’s also in part to the fact that vitamin pills, gummies, and powders have always made me incredibly nervous, and I’ve never been able to make a long-term commitment to taking them. How am I supposed to know where that 11.5 mg of vitamin E is coming from?
I brought my point up to Alicia Silverstone, who, ironically, I was meeting to learn about her Mykind Organic Vitamin Chews with Garden of Life. She completely understood my hesitations, though, I can’t say I’m surprised. Silverstone is a known advocate for living life as clean, organically, and toxin-free as possible.

“I was not really into vitamins at all, but when I was pregnant with my son, my midwife was like, ‘You need to take a prenatal.’ Why do I need to take prenatal? For folic acid? I eat folic acid all day long in my kale and in my greens. That’s just how I eat,” said Silverstone. “She was like, ‘What about when you’re traveling or when you’re having a bad day? It’s good to have an insurance policy.’ So, she sold me on the insurance policy.”
After not being able to find a certified organic vitamin made purely from whole foods, Silverstone made it her mission to create what was missing on the market. In addition to vitamin sprays, herbal supplements, and collagen-building tablets, she created a women’s multi-vitamin that’s 100 percent food-based and free of additives. “It’s certified organic, non-GMO verified, vegan, gluten-free,” she told me. “There’s nothing you can’t read. There’s no stearates [a common filler added to vitamins] or anything. They’re just delicious.”

What I found the most comforting is that in addition to seeing how many milligrams of zinc and vitamin C I’m getting, I can see exactly which foods those vitamins are coming from, and how. Was it pureed? Is it the stalk of the broccoli or just the flower? You get all that info — and because of that, I was willing to give them a shot.
I took four daily (the serving size) for a month. I’m a fairly healthy person that eats a clean, veggie-rich diet, but like Silverstone said, I didn’t mind having the insurance policy, especially on those inevitable Saturdays when pizza and brownies are the main focus of my meals.

I can’t say I saw anything miraculous happen, though I haven’t been sick in a while and I did skip over the head colds all my friends were getting. That very well could just be a coincidence, and maybe due to the fact that I’ve committed to getting more sleep and drinking more water.
Regardless, these vitamins don’t make me feel nervous or question what I’m putting into my body, which is the most important thing to me. I’ll still have that apple a day, but I don’t mind adding in a gummie chew now, too.
