'The Bachelorette': Who Else Was in the Running to be the Next Bachelorette?

On Tuesday, it was announced that Hannah Brown would be the next Bachelorette. Despite some initial mixed reactions, fans are starting to settle into the idea of “Alabama Hannah” taking the lead role in the next season.

The lead on each season of The Bachelor or Bachelorette controls how interesting the show is to watch. Some leads, like Ben Higgins, were great to watch because you were really rooting for them to find love. Others, like Juan Pablo Galavis, were great because it was like watching a train wreck week after week.

Brown, who struggled to express herself often when competing for Bachelor Colton Underwood’s love, hasn’t really given us much to go off of to determine how her season will play out.

Though the nation has begun to accept Brown as the Bachelorette, we can’t help but wonder who else was in the running to hand out roses?

You may remember Burnett as the confident blonde who proudly proclaimed that she was promiscuous at the Women Tell All special.

Burnett was never afraid to speak her mind during her fight for Underwood, and was even less scared to go after what she wanted. Early on, she was dubbed the “villain” of her season after kissing Underwood in front of the other women and touching the rose on her group date.

But that didn’t stop her from being in the running for Bachelorette.

“With Demi, we thought she was going to be a villain,” Robert Mills, ABC’s Senior Vice President of Alternative Series, Specials & Late-Night Programming told E! News. “She’s like a Corinne [Olympios] or she’s like a Tierra [LiCausi] or one of these other sort of classic villains, and then you thought, no, she’s not like that. She speaks her mind and she’s very open.”

Mills revealed to the outlet that Burnett was “a strong contender” for the role.

Of course, they had doubts about the 24-year-old leading the show as she was so polarizing to audiences, but they still interviewed her for the role anyway.

“It was certainly fun to sit with Demi and imagine what that season would’ve been like and we know it would’ve been great,” he said.

Looking at the trolls like… We live in a world where we never do anything right. Ever. Everyone always has an opinion. This experience has been so incredibly difficult. This show is super easy to make fun of, I get it, but viciously tearing people down is absolutely disgusting. Girls on my season are getting death threats, I’m getting told to go kill myself. That’s not okay. We are not perfect. We screw up (myself maybe more than others) but this show is partly about finding yourself, and that means falling in the process. You can have your opinions, but keep the extra hurtful comments to yourself. The internet can be very dark, and instead of feeding into it, try taking a step back. We are real people. These emotions are real. You’re watching a tv show, but we felt all of these feelings in a very intense way. Remember that the next time you go to someone’s page to tear them down.

The casting team also sat down with Adams and Miller-Keyes before deciding on Brown.

The problem with choosing Miller-Keyes was that there had been rumors going around the Bachelor mansion that she was on the show solely for the purpose of becoming the next Bachelorette, so choosing her may have only confirmed that.

“They were all great,” Mills recalled of his interviews with the women. “Tayshia and Caleynn would’ve been fantastic seasons.”

WHATTA DAY ✨ breathed the same air as @taylorswift so that’s cool?! Also thanks @mondrianlosangeles for letting me get ready with an amazing view

Godwin was the last one to be broken up with by the former football player. At the live finale, it was clear that Godwin was still in shock over what went down between her and Underwood. Her lingering sadness over the breakup made the casting team think twice.

She “was clearly still really heartbroken,” Mills said of Godwin. “It’s very hard. On one hand, that’s a great story of somebody getting over someone they were in love with. But it happened so quickly, that was kind of the worry there.”

Brown’s season of The Bachelorette will air on May 13 at 8 p.m.
