I don’t want to spend it with my parents but there will be a terrible fuss if I don’t.
I am 28 and their only daughter. My brothers can do no wrong but nothing I do is ever right for them.
This year I want to have a happy Christmas – which is something I’ve never had in the past because of them.
They have ruined any excitement I ever felt about it, moaning about everything and killing off any pleasure I have ever felt.
I know it will cause trouble but I want to stay away from them this year.
I am thinking about volunteering but I don’t know where to start.
DEIDRE SAYS: You have every right to spend Christmas in the way you choose – and volunteering can be a great way to share a bit of happiness at this time of year.
My e-leaflet Worried About Christmas? will give you lots of ideas.
Tell your parents you are doing something different this year and your mind is made up.
If they react badly, say that you hope they enjoy spending Christmas their own way, then walk away.
