New mum shocked by pal’s ‘disgusting’ comment at first catch-up since birth

A mum was left upset and annoyed when her friend claimed she had "not given birth properly" because she had an emergency c-section.

The women went to catch up with pals for the first time after having her baby five months ago and was asked how her labour was.

She gave a brief summary, explaining she was induced, did back to back labour until fully dilated, pushed with episiotomy, forceps and then an emergency cesearean.

But she was shocked by one of her friends’ "bonkers" opinion after she said she had "only done the easy bit" of labour and accused her of having "no idea" what birth is really like.

The cruel woman continued: "So you’ve come away from that thinking that you know what it’s like to have a baby.

"You’ve not given birth properly, you’ve not been in transition, you’ve only done the easy bit.

"So many women think they’ve given birth but they have no idea."

The mum said she felt uncomfortable by her friend’s comments so just changed the subject, but was upset and left with a "nasty taste in her mouth".

She wrote: "Maybe she’s right and I’ve only had the easy bit (in which case I would hate to see the next bit!!) but surely no one really thinks like this about labour?

"My other friend didn’t agree but didn’t necessarily disagree; she said that a section is the easy option but if your body can’t give birth properly then it’s not your fault."

Unsure of what to do, the mum decided to share the story on Mumsnet to see what other parents thought.

Other parents jumped to her defence and told her to ignore her.

One wrote: "That person is not a friend. What a horrible thing to say."

Another commented: "Your friend’s attitude is disgraceful and shocking. I would definitely distance myself from her. Who the hell does she think she is to be so judgemental."

One woman said she believes the opposite to be true, and said the mum actually did the hardest bit.

She said: "Err… no. They sound ridiculous. And actually for me, actually pushing the baby out was the easy bit! The hard bit was the hours and hours of contractions leading up to it."
