James Middleton opens up about ‘crippling’ depression: ‘It was taking over’

James Middleton has found his strength again after his private battle with depression.

Back in January, Kate Middleton’s younger brother detailed his mental health issues in an emotional op-ed for The Daily Mail, noting before seeking treatment, he was consumed by “debilitating inertia.”

“During the day I’d drag myself up and go to work, then just stare with glazed eyes at my computer screen, willing the hours to tick by so I could drive home again,” he explained.

Today, the English entrepreneur is continuing to open up about his depression in a brand new interview with Tatler Magazine for their August issue.

James Middleton, by his own admission, has had a charmed and privileged upbringing. And yet, life for the youngest of the Middleton clan hasn’t all been plain sailing. In the August issue (on sale Thursday 27 June), he speaks openly about his sudden ascent to fame aged 23, when his sister married the future King of England. “[The depression was] crippling. It’s what keeps you in bed, while anxiety makes you feel guilty for being there. I thought ‘What do I have to be depressed about?’ I’ve been so lucky with my upbringing, I had all the things I wanted. It’s not that I wanted more, but there was something that wasn’t always there… And the more I ignored it, the more it was taking over,” the 32-year-old revealed to Tatler Magazine.

Middleton also went into detail about the pressures that comes with being related to the Duchess of Cambridge.

“Suddenly, and very publicly, I was being judged about whether I was a success or a failure. That does put pressure on you. Because in my mind I’m doing this irrespective of my family and events that have happened.”

In a positive turn of events, the 32-year-old says he is “back to his old self again” and especially happy in his current relationship with his French financial expert girlfriend, Alizee Thevenet.

“I am happy – I feel like James Middleton again. I feel like I was when I was 13, excited about life. I feel like myself again and I couldn’t ask for more.”
